Few topics in e-commerce have generated more heated discussion than the issue of disintermediation, Will most Web businesses adopt the direct sale model of a Dell Computer? Or will the Internet introduce a whole new wave of intermediaries, aggregators, and on-line stores? In Net Worth, John Hagel and Marc Singer forecast that the latter will prove the dominant trend. More specifically, the authors believe that what they have called "infomediaries" will form a critical new link between consumers and their would-be suppliers. Although infomediaries may not be all that different from what others have called agents, it's becoming clear that consumers are looking for a trusted source of information and support, while sellers are looking for self-selected and targeted audiences. The Web provides the platform where these two worlds can naturally come together.
